OVERCOMING PREJUDICES
“If you speak English, all the doors are open. If you speak Spanish, hearts will also open”. This rule of thumb also applies to Colombia – even if the Spanish is not always fluent. Most Colombians are generally quite nice, patient and helpful. They are happy to see every foreigner who visits their country, as they know how its reputation abroad is undifferentiated. It is thus advisable not to start right away discussing clichés of Colombia, as the country has other, more pleasant things to offer than the usual prejudices.

FAMOUS FOUNDER
Christopher Columbus may have given the country its name, but never set foot on Colombia’s soil: he merely sailed past, leaving it to subsequent Conquistadors to occupy it in their search for gold and emeralds. Colombia is still a leading producer of emeralds, although visitors find other treasures of far greater interest. Colombia’s greatest natural wealth is its animals and plants. It is estimated that there are 55 000 species of plants alongside an impressive range of animal life. UNESCO has declared a total of five areas in Colombia as Biosphere reserves, including the “Parque Nacional Natural El Tuparro” and the “Santuario de fauna y flora Ciénega Grande de Santa Marta”.
