SPAIN’S THIRD-LARGEST CITY
Valencia is on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, some 350 km south of Barcelona at the mouth of the Turia River. The provincial capital, with around 900 000 inhabitants, is Spain’s third-largest city. The mild climate in Valencia is influenced by the Mediterranean and attracts many tourists with average annual temperature of 18C and fabulous bathing beaches. Valencia, however, is not only known for tourism, but also for its rich harvest of citrus fruits, which are exported from Valencia to markets all over Europe.

Popular traditions and festivals are today’s reminders of the national hero “El Cid” or gothic and baroque buildings keep alive the times when Valencia was an independent kingdom. POPULAR FESTIVALS
Valencia’s calendar of popular festivals is rich and multifaceted. Every season has its own festivals, replete with traditions. On March 19, for example, the “fallas” occur in the street of Valencia, dedicated to St. Joseph. On this day, huge structures, so called mourning scaffolds or catafalques, with papier-mâché figures, which are publicly burned 4 days later. Festivities surrounding the ascension, the Moorish and Christian festival, and of course the famous “La Tomatina” tomato festival are also eminently worth seeing.
