Tarifa is probably the most attractive vacation spot on the southern coast of Spain. Thick fortress walls protect the historic city centre and the narrow alleys invite visitors to explore them- accompanied by a cool breeze. Due to its location “on the southern tip”, the wind always blows directly over the sea, “water-cooled” into the town. The constant wind has made Tarifa Europe’s surfing and kite surfing capital. The international surfing scene is the main feature of the streets on summer evenings. Sunburned people meet in the many pubs and tapas bars before moving on to enjoy the nightlife in the discos. Non-surfers also have plenty to enjoy: the many shops offer inviting opportunities and the street cafés in the old town are a “surfer-free” zone during the day.
FINEST SANDY BEACH
The approximately 10 km long sandy beach is probably the finest on Spain’s entire coastline. Here everything is still natural and there is plenty of space, limited on the western end by an enormous migrating dune. Behind that stretch another 9 kilometres of beach with idyllic little bays and mischievous cliffs projecting into the water, washed by the surf in winter. This is nature pure! If it gets too windy on the main beach, the small “Playa Chica” town beach offers the best alternative.
STARTING POINT FOR CULTURE FANS
Opportunities for sports and recreation are virtually unlimited in Tarifa. Culture fans, in particular use the town as a starting point for visiting the towns of Andalusia. Cordoba, Malaga, Seville and Granada within easily and relatively quick reach. Short trips to Morocco are also possible direct from Tarifa.
