Learn Spanish in San Sebastián
SUMMER RESIDENCE OF THE POWERFUL
With 200 000 inhabitants, Salamanca is one of Spain’s most attractive cities, even though this is not widely known. In the shadow of Madrid or Barcelona, the coastal city has often led a wallflower existence. This has been a blessing rather than a curse for the region as it has allowed San Sebastian to retain its original charm. Not only the Spanish Royal Family, but also other famous Spaniards used to spend their summers in Sat Sebastian, and even today many imposing villas and splendid façades testify to its importance as a sophisticated resort. San Sebastian has a total of 3 inviting beaches in the protected “La Concha” Bay. Both sides of the bay are enclosed by cliffs: Monte Urgull with the statue of Jesus watching over the city, and Monte Igueldo, which is home to the first class hotel of the same name. Here, 200 metres above the city, one can take in the fascinating panorama. Visitor with strong nerves can also drive the historic helter-skelter named Montana Suiza. A small amusement park has flourished on the hill for almost a century and the rollercoaster has always been the main attraction.
BASK FOOD AND LOVE OF LIFE
The narrow lanes of the old town are an invitation to extensive tours of discovery. Here you will find countless cafés, bars and restaurants where you can taste the typical pinxtos: small snacks, typical of the region, which are ordered with appropriate drinks similar to tapas. The variations range from simple break and cheese to filled pasties or seafood ravioli. Although the pinxtos taste wonderful and can easily make a meal, its best not to miss the meal too often, for San Sebastian is a culinary Mecca, with numerous gourmet stars to prove it. If you want to dine in “Arzak”, reservations are definitely necessary- 6 months ahead of time! With the summer jazz festival and the film festival in September, “Donostia” as the city is called in the Bask language, has two important cultural events. A handful of museums, a few theatres, galleries and cinemas and the “Palacio de Congresos y Auditorio del Kursaal”, as the concert house is known, provide entertainment outside the major festivals.
