HISTORIC UNIVERSITY TOWN
The provincial capital Salamanca, on the right bank of the Tormes River, is home to Spain’s oldest university, which is still one of the country’s largest and most famous institutions. From October to June, many students from all the provinces of Spain ensure a stimulating, youthful nightlife. Monumental churches, houses in all architectural styles from romantic to baroque, streets redolent of history, unique squares: not for nothing did UNESCO include Salamanca in the world cultural heritage.
THE GOLDEN CITY
The famous Plaza Mayor, the lively centre of Salamanca, is full of cafés, shops, bars and restaurants. On summer evenings, the large enclosed plaza is filled with the voices of hundreds of people who meet in the café or on the street to discuss the day’s events. The pleasant, unique and relaxed atmosphere continues into the early morning hours in the rest of the old city as well. In the evenings, the houses built of ochre coloured sandstone gleam gently in the setting sun. The sunsets have also given the city its nickname of “La Dorada”.

Despite the population of around 160 000, Salamanca has remained small and compact. Almost everywhere in the city can be reached on foot. Salamanca has a dry, continental climate: warm in summer, cold in winter with frost on some nights, but frequently sunny during the day. Salamanca is in the province of Castilla y Leon, in which a classical Castilian is spoken, which is understood throughout the entire Spanish-speaking world. There are numerous opportunities for excursions, e.g., into the unspoiled nature in the surrounding countryside, visits to historic cities and castles, towns such as Segovia, Avila, Burgos, Santiago de Compostela, Leon or Madrid, 200 km away. Salamanca is also ideal as a starting point for trips to nearby Portugal.
