THE CENTRE OF THE COSTA DEL SOL
Malaga is a provincial capital with more than half a million inhabitants, making it the 2nd largest city in Andalusia as well as the economic and cultural centre of the Costa del Sol. The city is directly on the Mediterranean and enjoys a very mild climate. The sun shines for some 300 days a year and temperatures often exceed 20 C, even in the winter months. The Port of Malaga has been an important link to North Africa since ancient times.

A CITY DIVIDED IN TWO
Malaga is clearly divided into two parts by the Guadalmedina River. In the west is the new city with skyscrapers, office buildings and lots of traffic, while in the east the old city offers many bars, restaurants and the cathedral in the centre. The Gibralfaro Hill offers a splendid view of the old city and the port. Malaga has few sights, in sharp contrast to the traditional tourist destinations such as Cordoba, Granada or Seville. The city has its own unmistakable charm, however. The bustling life of a major port, the vitality of southern Spain and friendly, helpful people make Malaga an experience. The many parks in the city centre also make a most positive impression. In some areas old houses surrounded by large gardens dominate the streetscape.

HINTERLAND FOR NATURE LOVERS
To the west of Malaga lies the fertile Vega de Malaga, in which oranges, figs, bananas, sugarcane, cotton and grapes for sweet Malaga wine are planted. A visit to the hinterland of Malaga is absolutely recommended. Around 40 km north of the city is the El Torcal Nature Park and further west the spectacular Garganta del Chorro Gorge.
