Madrid has been the capital of Spain since the 16th century. It lies in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula and at an altitude of 646 metres above seal level is Europe’s highest capital. The climate is dry year round, very warm in summer and cold in winter, albeit generally sunny. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons in terms of climate. This modern, lively metropolis has seen astonishing development since the end of the Franco dictatorship. The “Movida” showed the way forward and led Spain with fresh ideas and enormous artistic potential. Madrid came alive and the “Movida” a concept that expresses the new joie de vivre and culture- shifted strongly in the direction of nightlife. For the city does not wake up to its unique brand of beauty until after 11pm. Everywhere, lights and crowds tempt people to socialize until the wee small hours. Countless street cafés around the Castellana, small theatres, bars in the pub areas and discos in the outer suburbs change Madrid at night into the pulsating heart of Spain. The short nights are compensated by the siesta, the afternoon rest, during which most shops and offices are closed.
