BIRTHPLACE OF THE SPANISH CONSTITUTION
The capital of the province with the same name, Cadiz is situated on a peninsula that only has two points of access- a bridge in the East and a headland in the South. Under Phoenician and Carthaginian rule with the old name «Gadir», Cadiz gained a reputation as a prosperous trading centre. Due to its location, the city was one of Spain’s most important ports until the opening of trade links with America in 1778. Cadiz is also the birthplace of the first Spanish constitution which was published in March 1812.
The white houses, the splendour of the Baroque churches and the bustling port area dazzle not only the foreign visitors to Cadiz but also Spanish holiday makers. In the summer months, they arrive in droves from all over Spain. The peninsula is also worth a visit in winter when temperatures still average 12 to 18 degrees during the day.
CARNAVAL DE CÁDIZ
The »Carnaval de Cádiz« is one of the most famous carnivals in the world. For ten days a year, the city is ruled by groups such as the Chirigotas, Choros or Comparsas. It is not only the groups’ costumes that grab attention, but the intellectual, satirical and musical performances. The carnival’s intellectual undertones do not come from nowhere. Cadiz’ inhabitants are the cleverest in Spain. The performances deal with politics, current affairs and everyday life. The carnival does not limit itself to ten days a year, but, due to the regular rehearsals and competitions, is present all year round. Colour is king on carnival Saturday as the whole town dresses up. This is also true for tourists who can use this as an opportunity to actively participate in the carnival.
