MARITIME METROPOLIS
Barcelona is a city with a definite Mediterranean charm. The city’s trademarks are the many buildings designed by the local star architect, Antonio Guadi, the most famous of which is the Sagrada familia Cathedral. Building began on this unique structure in 1882 and no early end is in sight. Guadi’s Parc Guell, which has been part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage since 1984, is also noteworthy. The famous “La Rambla” area, with its shops, cafés and street artists, is in the centre of the charming inner city. “La Rambla” ends at the old port, where the 60 metre high column with a statue of Christopher Columbus and the seafaring museum are located. Further along is the Maremagnum Amusement Centre, with a gigantic cinema complex, sports complex, countless shops and restaurants in all price categories. Immediately behind it is the Aquarium, Europe’s largest underwater zoo.

The city is home to an overwhelming range of cultural events. Numerous museums, including a Picasso Museum and a Miro Collection, historical and architecturally interesting buidings at every corner, a lively, internationally renowned theatre scene with unique companies, monthly city and cultural festivals. Nightlife also makes Barcelona one of Europe’s top destinations. The club scene is booming and there is literally something to appeal to every taste. In summer, the Sonar Festival is one of the world’s largest musical events. Four full days with live concerts, audiovisual shows and appearances by the highest profile DJs on the electronic music scene. A visit to a Barcelona FC home game is an absolute must for all sports fans. Camp Nou is one of the world’s largest and most attractive temples of football. The trip up to Tibidabo, the local mountain, and 532 metres high is also unquestionably recommended. Historical tramcars and a funicular take visitors to the peak, where there is a popular amusement park.
