FROM ORIGINAL CORNERSTONE TO MODERN TIMES
Lima has over 7.5 million inhabitants and is by far the largest city and the most significant business and cultural centre in the country. The impressive historic centre of the city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is here where one can find excellent examples of colonial architecture including the Santo Domingo and San Francisco monasteries, and the Lima Cathedral, the cornerstones of which were laid by seafarer and city founder, Francisco Pizarro. The Milaflores district gives a stark contrast to the historic part of the city. The tourist and hotel district contains large and modern shopping areas, theatres, cinemas and art galleries, as well as beautiful green spaces and parks.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY
There are several archaeological sites right in the middle of the city, including Huaca Huallamarca or Huaca Pucllana. Near to Lima, on the Pacific Ocean, lies the most important sanctuary of the Pervuian Coast, stemming from the Incan civilization: Pachacamac, built in 300 AD. The most significant buildings at the site are the sun and the moon temples, the pilgrim square, and the Pachakamq and Urpi-Wachaq temples. South of Lima is a strip of beautiful holiday towns and beaches, particularly popular for their watersports and sunbathing, or for just simply enjoying the beauty of the Pacific Ocean.
