Learn Spanish in Santiago de Chile
THE COUNTRY’S UNDISPUTED CENTRE
Santiago de Chile lies in a green plain within sight of the Andes. Approximately one third of all Chileans live in the city. Glittering skyscrapers and modern office buildings testify to the economic growth in recent decades, as do the crowds of business people hurrying through the streets. The street vendors and shoeshine boys, hawking their wares and services in the streets, reflect the fact that not all Chileans have profited from the growth. Walking around Santiago, one notices immediately that Chile was a country of immigrants. Only 7% of the population are of Amerindian origin.
SPECTACULAR VIEW OF THE SEA OF HOUSES
Santiago’s most important sights are clustered around the “Plaza de Armas”, in the heart of the city. The square is dominated by the 18th century cathedral and other notable buildings from that time. Close by are lively pedestrian zones with many shops and restaurants. Shopping is also excellent in Providencia and Las Condes, two parts of the city to the east. Here, many international companies have their offices, surrounded by elegant boutiques and shopping centres. The many bars and discos in the Bellavista district ensure excitement as the sun goes down. Visitors to Bellavista during the daytime can take the rack railway to Cerro San Cristobal. This 806 metre high hill provides a spectacular view over Santiago’s sea of houses.
RECREATION ON THE BEACH OR THE SKI SLOPES
The seaside resorts of Vina del Mar and Valparaiso are approximately 100 kilometres from Santiago. Not only the sea makes them worth a visit: culturally too, Valparaiso and its historic centre are well worth seeing. If your preferences lean more to sports, the nearby Andes provide opportunities for trekking, climbing or skiing.
