THE COUNTRY WITH CRAZY GEOGRAPHY
Chile stretches for 4300 kilometres, but is only 180 kilometres wide on average. Lying between the pacific and the Andes, Chile’s most striking feature is its overwhelming natural beauty and contrasts. In the north, fascinating dessert landscapes await the visitor, while the south offers mighty glaciers. The country in between is rich in luxuriant primeval forests, enormous plains, steep fiords, gigantic snow-capped Andean peaks and volcanoes, an incredible profusion of scenic wonders. Talking of volcanoes, Ojos del Salado is the world’s highest, at 6893 metres.

NO MASS TOURISM
Although the numbers of tourists have been rising steadily since the 1990s, it is by no means a mass phenomenon. The country is generally well developed and bus travel is easy. Chile is a dream come true for nature lovers. Numerous natural parks such as the Torres del Paine, lures visitors with extensive hiking and touring. The national park was declared part of the world’s national heritage in 1995. UNESCO has declared a number of places in Chile part of the world cultural heritage and especially worthy of protection: Chiloe National Park, the historic harbour area of Valparaiso and the Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpetre works in the atacama in the north of Chile.

SOUTH AMERICA’S FINEST WINE
Chilean wine is reputedly South America’s best. Wine has been produced in Chile for over 400 years, but only in the last few decades has the world taken notice of the noble wines of South America. Chile today is one of the world’s six top wine producers.
