CITY AT AN ALTITUDE OF 2,900 METRES
With around 240,000 inhabitants, Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia and is home to the highest court of justice of the country. The city is at an altitude of around 2,900 metres, with a pleasant and moderate climate, and with its rich, well-tended plazas and parks it is considered the most beautiful city in Bolivia. The historic area of Sucre, with its white buildings, is the best preserved example of Spanish colonialism in South America and since 1991 has been on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.
TRANSPORTATION-WISE - SOMEWHAT REMOTE
While the city is well accessible via airplane, it is still quite remote in that the road systems through the windy, mountainous landscape are not yet well developed. Recently, a highway was built between La Paz and Sucre, and it is one of the best connecting roadways in Bolivia today. There is an airport several kilometres outside of the city providing flights to other larger cities in Bolivia such as La Paz, Cochabamba or Santa Cruz. There are also good bus connections to La Paz, Cochabamba, Potosi, Uyuni, Tarija and Santa Cruz.
