San Carlos de Bariloche is located in the Argentine province of Rio Negro at the foot of the Andes. The town is surrounded by the Nahuel Huapi, Gutierrez and Mascardi lakes and the fertile green Tronador, Catedral and Lopez mountain chains. This is where the vast expanse of Patagonia begins. With 100,000 inhabitants, the city is the largest in the province and has become an important tourist centre, with its unique location in the verdant mountain landscape, visited by up to a million tourists a year. The famous “El Boson” hippie colony is located in the south of Bariloche.

Bariloche is popular with tourists virtually year round. Extreme sports enthusiasts (kayakers, glacier flyers, mountaineers) come in the summer, along with trout fishermen, hikers and bathers, who sun themselves on the beaches of the Nahuel Huapi lakes. In winter, the Cerro Catedral South America’s largest and most important winter sports centre, attracts skiers and snowboarders alike. In the off-season, Bariloche is by far the most popular destination in Argentina for class trips and honeymoons--. which is why the hotels are fully booked almost year-round.

The name Bariloche comes from the Mapuche word “Vuriloche” and means “people on the other side of the mountain” (Vuri = behind, Che = people). The Mapuches used the Vuriloche Pass to cross the Andes and was for decades a well-kept secret from their European colonial masters.
