Picturesque Playa del Carmen in the Yucatan Peninsula has developed into the pearl of the Caribbean in recent years. The harmonious little coastal town with 100 000 inhabitants, affectionately known as “Playa” is still considered a closely guarded secret amongst experienced travellers. Its spectacular location directly across from the island of Cozumel on the northern hemisphere’s longest reef, the turquoise water and white sandy beach, invite visitors to a wide range of water sports in a typically relaxed Mexican atmosphere. Visitors with an interest in culture value the proximity to the former Mayan cultural monuments and the white colonial city of Merida is of course well worth a visit. The famous Quinta Avenita in Playa is one of Mexico’s most attractive pedestrian zones, located only a block away from the beach. Here you will find restaurants, street cafés, small stores and boutiques selling typical Mexican goods: silver jewellery, ceramics, wooden artifacts and tapestries. Evenings in the Quinta Avenita begin with the Happy Hour between 5 and 7 pm and the Caribbean nightlife leaves no wishes unfulfilled.
