MEXICO PERSONIFIED
The capital of the state of the same name is a popular destination in the southern Sierra Madre, both for tourists and for artists from all over the world. For Mexicans, Oaxaca personifies everything that they love about their country: the traditions of the Indios, the baroque pride of the Spaniards and the peace and quiet that vanished long ago from other cities. Nestled between sun-scorched hills and embraced by two rivers, Oaxaca lies in a green valley. Its old town was declared part of the world cultural heritage in 1987. During the day the city is a sea of colour: Indian women in blue and white ponchos walking past blood red, azure blue or sea green house walls. When the cathedral glows yellow and green in the evening light, the locals move toward the “Zocalo” ringed by colonial buildings, cafés and restaurants, to the lively accompaniment of musicians and peddlers.
A NEARBY WONDER OF THE WORLD
One of the most famous pre-Columbian sites is located on a mountain peak some 10 kilometres from Oaxaca: Monte Alban. Reporter and writer Egon Erwin Kisch called Monte Alban- a complex site including pyramids, temples and graves- one of the wonders of the world. Monte Alban (“White Mountain”) was once the capital of the Zapoteks. The Zapotek name for the place was “Danipaguache” meaning “Holy Mountain”. The origins of the settlement date back to the 8th century B.C. Monte Alban reached the zenith of its power in the 5th and 6th centuries, when up to 30 000 people lived on the mountain slopes. After 700, the city lost much of its importance and was abandoned around 950. Later it was used only as a burial place.
