Cuernavaca is the most popular holiday destination, both for Mexico City’s high society and for foreign visitors, for the city is only 76 kilometres south of the capital. It has always been this way: the Aztec nobility came here to relax and Cortes built a giant palace in 1529, which is today a heavily visited museum. This is one of Mexico’s oldest colonial buildings. The emperor Maximilian came here regularly, and high profile guests have made the city world famous in recent years: Barbara Hutton, the Woolworth heiress, built a genuine ancient Japanese residence here. Malcolm Lowry’s novel “Under the Volcano”, which was also a worldwide hit as a movie set in and around Cuernavaca. Around the palace, which was financed by the French “Silver King” Jose de la Borda stretches an incredible park with artificial lakes and an open-air theatre. Cuernavaca, the city of eternal spring, exerts a special attraction and is filled with Mexican joie de vivre.
ON THE TRAIL OF THE AZTECS
Students who are interested in history will have a field day in the archaeological site of Teopanzolco. The Tlahuicas built one of the largest pyramids in Mexico here, based on the “Templo Grande” in Tenochtitlan. The Tlahuicas culture us closely related to that of the Aztecs and many practices and features are synonymous with Aztec practice. During excavations, the remains of a gravesite containing ritual sacrifice in the form of skulls and sacrificial gifts were found.
