LIKE THE PHOENIX RISING UP FROM THE ASHES
Antigua is the capital city of Guatemala. After it was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1773, it was built up again, piece by piece. With a population of just over 50,000 people, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is therefore mainly a tourist area. Antigua still shows the scars of the numerous earthquakes that affected it, but still paints a lovely picture of a colonial city, with its many hotels, restaurants, shops and language schools. The magnificent parades during the Easter week (Semana Santa) are a cultural highlight in Antigua. Other attractions are the visible volcanos: Volcán de Agua, Acatenango and Fuego. Volcán Fuego remains active still today.
BAROQUE ARCHITECTURE AND COLONIAL CHARM
The center of the city is Plaza de Armas, where nowadays the Indio women sell their colourful woven textiles. Over the years, Antigua was able to preserve its colonial charm: public buildings, churches, and old residential buildings are examples of the baroque architecture and wealth of years gone by in this ancient capital city. Visitors are enchanted by the small cobblestone streets and 16th century churches and convents, with their beautiful fountains and gardens that remain well preserved and well tended.
