Learn Spanish in Quito

HIGH, HIGHER, QUITO.
It’s spring year round in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. The city is only 22 kilometres from the equator and the temperatures should be tropical. However, a ring of snow-capped volcanoes and an elevation of 2850 m above sea level ensure a temperate climate. Around 90 per cent of the inhabitants are Indios and of mixed race. Quito displays a delightful collection of modern architecture, majestic colonial buildings and relics of the age of the Spanish conquerors. The Plaza de la Independencia is the heart of the city and is dominated by the cathedral. The most romantic area bears the name of La Ronda. Its narrow streets and polished flagstones are fringed by majestic old houses with Spanish balconies. In the west of the city, a gondola lift rises to 4100 metres on the flanks of Pichincha. From there the view over the city and the surrounding mountains is incredible. The location directly at the foot of Pichincha is also the determining feature of Quito. The centre of the city especially slopes steeply, and gradients are frequently as much as 10%.

THE MOST SPANISH CITY IN THE NEW WORLD
The “Casco Colonial”, the old city with its monasteries, churches and white houses with red tiled roofs has not changed substantially since colonial days. In Quito, the city’s atmosphere is determined by more than 100 churches and 55 monasteries, as well as numerous townhouses and squares. As a result, the city earned the reputation of being the “most Spanish city in the New World”. It is home to the finest church in the Americas, “La Compañia”, extravagantly decorated both inside and out, which is considered a masterpiece of the baroque era and colonial style. Construction of the church, with its golden high alter took no less than 163 years. In the shadow of the modern age, the modern part of Quito lies in the north of the city. Here, skyscrapers provide a contrast with the churches and monasteries of the old city against the panorama of the Andes. Here you will find souvenir shops, museums, lots of restaurants and hotels, shopping centres, theatres, beautiful parks and tour organizers for excursions into the surrounding countryside.
