WLIKE A TIME MACHINE
Most Ecuadorians consider Cuenca the most beautiful city in their country, a real jewel. The capital of Azuay province lies 2549 metres high on the banks of the Tomebamba. The blue domes of the new cathedrals dominate the city’s skyline. It is home to 27 churches and their treasures. Romantic cobbled streets, flower-decked squares and well-tended colonial houses create a special atmosphere. Cuenca, with approximately 300,000 inhabitants is the third-largest city as well as the economic centre of the Southern Sierra. Arts and crafts are important here, alongside the textile and furniture industries. Pottery, Panama hats, gold and silver items, jewellery and artistic textiles such as ponchos and Ikat scarves are produced. A similarly wide range can also be found in the colourful markets held on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Cuenca is home to well-known artists, writers and philosophers as well as a state university, which enabled it to become the intellectual capital of the country.
THE ATHENS OF ECUADOR
Cuenca is known as the “Athens of Ecuador” because of its many cathedrals and gorgeous old town. In 1999, the old town was included in the UNESCO world cultural heritage list. The old and the new cathedrals are located on the city’s most important square, Plaza Abdón Calderón. “La Nueva Catedral” was never actually finished, as work on it was continually interrupted by earthquakes, never the less the cathedral has space for 10,000 believers.
