IN AN UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY
Panama is frequently overlooked by the travelling public- quite wrongly. It has a wonderful coastline with palm-fringed beaches, an astonishing variety of animals and plants and a proud, industrious population. Panama offers ideal conditions for hiking and climbing holidays and for people who enjoy snorkelling or watching tropical birds. Panama has some 30-nature preserves, which offer rewarding hiking holidays and sheer enjoyment of nature. Modern cities provide a counterpoint to sleepy colonial villages.
WHERE ATLANTIC AND PACIFIC MEET
When you think of Panama, the first thing that comes to mind is the Panama Canal. It was a daring idea and a long-standing dream of seafarers, to join the Atlantic and Pacific by a ship canal through Panama. After a French project failed, the Americans took up the project in the early 20th century. In 1903, the US signed a treaty with Panama that allowed them to build the Panama Canal through the Isthmus of Panama. The 81 kilometre long Panama Canal, which was inaugurated in 1914, has locks that can lift any vessel, from the smallest sailboat to the largest ocean liner as if they were featherweight, 26 metres above sea level and then lower them 26 metres.
