THE AFTERGLOW OF A GLORIOUS PAST
Cuba’s capital, with 2 million inhabitants, is one of the largest cities in the Caribbean. Expansive squares, aristocratic villas and majestic colonial buildings testify to the prosperity of previous centuries. Unesco declared the old city of Havana part of the world’s cultural heritage as early as 1982. Regrettably, some of the old buildings are in very poor condition and are in urgent need of renovation. Nevertheless, the city has retained a magical, almost noble quality. Churches, museums, monuments: every few steps in the old city of Havana reveal notable buildings and visitors owe it to themselves to take the time to explore each one. The Plaza de la Catedral is undoubtedly one of the finest squares. Surrounded by historic buildings and a magnificent 18th century cathedral, it is the site of a daily colourful market. When it gets too hot in the narrow alleyways, you can always retire to one of the tropical gardens or parks. Or take a stroll along the lively Malecon Promenade to cool off. Cool is actually something one never feels in this city: the temperatures are too high and the inhabitants too hot blooded.

REMEMBERING THE REVOLUTION
On May 1, millions of people from all over Cuba flock to the Plaza de la Revolucion to celebrate the holiday. On the square, an obelisk soars 142 metres into the sky in memory of Jose Martis, the hero of independence. Government buildings line the square, including the interior ministry, decorated with a mural of Che Guevara.
