THE SWITZERLAND OF LATIN AMERICA
Costa Rica is often described as an “oasis of peace” and the “Switzerland of Latin America”. Social differences here are less marked than in other Latin American countries and there is a large middle class. Costa Rica is the oldest and most authentic democracy in Latin America. Slavery was abolished in 1823 and the death sentence 60 years later. Women were given the vote in 1948. The country is home to the Universidad para la Paz (University for Peace) and the Inter-American Human Rights Court. The army was abolished in 1949 and the money that was freed up as a result was poured into educational and social programs. Costa Ricans are proud of the quality of their health system, their excellent schools and their cultural achievements. The spontaneous hospitality, friendliness and helpfulness of Costa Ricans make a stay here a very special experience.

PACIFIC SURF AND GENTLE CARIBBEAN WAVES
Mangroves, swamps, sandy beaches, bays, rainforests, fog shrouded forests and dry woods, mountain chains and volcanoes alternate and constitute Costa Rica’s multifaceted geography. The rocky west coast is exposed to the constant pounding of pacific waves, while the gentle Caribbean washes the tropical valleys and marshes in the east. The natural fauna parallels the geographic diversity. Costa Rica is home to many types of apes, anteaters, armadillos and sloths, more than 850 species of bird, many amphibians and more than 100 species of snake.
