VENICE OF THE NORTH
St. Petersburg is the “Venice of the North”. The city was founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703 in the marshy delta of the River Neva and until the 1917 revolution the residence of the tsars, the city long bore the name of its founder, until it was renamed “Petrograd” on the outbreak of World War One and again Leningrad on Lenin’s death in 1924. The city received its historic name of St. Petersburg again in 1991. The cityscape has a Western European flavour which documents the desire of Peter the Great and his successors to open a door to the West and thereby to lead the enormous, underdeveloped empire into the progressive Western orbit. Famous Italian architects created an elegant European metropolis, heavily influenced by classicism, on the banks of the Neva with wide boulevards, majestic squares, countless canals, and artistically designed bridges. St. Petersburg today is a city court in the throes of change; lively, progressive, a great open metropolis with an enchanting mixture of old fashioned charm and ultra modern lifestyle.

NUMEROUS ARCHITECTURAL MONUMENTS
Among St. Petersburg’s most important architectural monuments are the fortress of Peter and Paul, which forms the historic city centre. The cathedrals that are part of the fortress, the graves of Russia’s Rulers with a gilded tower have become the city’s trademark. The golden dome of the enormous St. Isaac’s cathedral characterizes the silhouette of the metropolis. The admiralty and the old stock exchange, the splendid winter palace with the Hermitage, one of the world’s most important art museums, are additional high points for any visit.

SPLENDID CASTLES OF THE TSARS
During the rule of the tsars, a series of magnificent summer residences were built in the vicinity of St. Petersburg. These include the “Russian Versailles”, the Peterhof palace on the Gulf of Finland, the palace of St. Katherine in Zarskoje Selo (Pushkin) or the magnificent palace of Tsar Paul I in Pavlovsk.
