Learn Russian in Moskau
A FEAST FOR THE EYES
Russia’s capital offers a superfluity of history. Numerous churches, monasteries and cathedrals tell of the good old days of the tsars. Buildings in the monumental (confectionary style) and skyscrapers in an objective, functional style hark back to the Soviet Union. But whether you want to visit the Red Square, the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral or the Lenin mausoleum, the city of the golden onion domes is always a delight for the eyes! The Kremlin and Red Square have been on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list since 1990.
ONE OF EUROPE’S GREATEST CITIES
Moscow has played a leading role in the life of the entire country for centuries. “Every Russian feels that he is looking at his mother, when he looks at Moscow”, as author Lou Tolstoy once said. For the past nine centuries, Moscow has occupied both sides of the Moskva River, as well as the numerous legends, songs and sagas in which the Russian people sing of the beauty and greatness of their capital. The capital, with a population of 10.5 million is today one of Europe’s greatest cities. In all, members of over 100 nationalities and ethnic groups live in Moscow, although 90% of the inhabitants are ethnic Russians.
BUILDINGS WELL WORTH SEEING
The many notable sights include many representatives of the styles of past centuries, as well as the present; monuments to famous writers, professors and statesmen, as well as monuments and statues honouring great historical events. The most important building and historical monument is the Kremlin, the oldest section of Moscow, which includes the seat of the Russian president. The walls that have survived to this day and nineteen towers were erected in the 15th century and constituted a major fortification in those days.
