Faro, with a population of around 41000 is the administrative centre of the Algarve. The origins date back to Roman times, when it was known under the Latin name of “Ossonoba”. The city was occupied by the Arabs in 713 and there is still extensive evidence of the Arab occupation. Faro, with its airport, is the gateway for most visitors to and from the Algarve, although it has an interesting old town of its own, with a number of historic buildings. The best known and most famous include the Paço Episcopal bishop’s palace, the cathedral, the old city wall, or for relaxation, the Alameda Joao de Deus city park.
