Salvador da Bahia nestles on one of the most beautiful bays on the American continent. The first Portuguese ship dropped anchor in 1551 on All Saints Day, carrying the famous Amerigo Vespucci. Salvador, founded in 1549, is rich in history, a city that has retained its unique charm. Its people are a byword for joie de vivre. Young people party on the “local beach” with its simple fish restaurants and drink stands, between the lighthouses of Barra and Itapoá and on the beaches of the island of Itaparica. Brazil’s sixth largest city is the capital of the state of Bahia, and was once the national capital. The steep cliffs rise some 80 metres, and the lower town beneath them is connected with the upper town by funicular railways, lifts and ramp-like roads. The upper town is a collection of baroque splendour. Countless baroque churches, the largest number anywhere in Brazil, are the pride of Salvador. Monasteries and palaces date back to the colonial era and some of them have been extensively renovated in recent years.
