CAPITAL OF CONTRASTS
Whether Kabuki Theatre or Pokemon figures, sumo wrestling or Godzilla films- Tokyo is a fascinating metropolis in which Japanese tradition and modern life come together. There is perhaps nowhere else on earth that features greater contrasts, here the absolutely tech savvy, colourful, loud, crazy, modern world, there the old traditional tea room. Tokyo is also the site of the old Imperial Palace. Japan’s capital is a must for every visitor, for no one can fail to enthuse about its cultural contrasts in a city of mobile telephones, safe streets and punctual trains.

THE WORLD’S LARGEST METROPOLITAN AREA
Tokyo lies in the Kanto region in the east of the Island of Honshu. While “only” around 8.5 million people live in the city itself, the Tokyo metropolitan area, with more than 36 million inhabitants, is one of the world’s largest. The region is in addition the financial, industrial, business and cultural centre of Japan with numerous universities, colleges, research institutes, theatres and museums.

CULINARY DELIGHTS
Visitors to Tokyo have a choice of 50 000 restaurants. From a culinary point of view, the city is exciting and adventurous if you try local specialities. These include a surprisingly larges selection of inexpensive noodle soups up to the aristocratic “kaiseki”. Fish, rice, soybeans and vegetable play the main role in traditional Japanese cuisine, but “sashimi” (raw fish) is undoubtedly the best known. The freshest fish is found in the small restaurants around the fish market “Tsukiji”. If you don’t like Japanese food, however, you will find large numbers of McDonald’s, Burger Kings, KFCs, Starbuck’s or Dunkin Donuts for a between meals snack.
