HIGH STANDARD OF LIVING
Fukuoka is idyllically set in Hakata Bay on the sea shore. The Kyūshū region’s biggest city has been flourishing magnificently for years and boasts some of the highest standards of living in Asia. Fukuoka and the region form the gateway to important trading partners such as China and Korea. In addition to the architecture, the nightlife and the city’s well known cuisine- there are more restaurants here than anywhere else in Japan-, the nearby volcanoes are a major attraction. The most famous volcano in Japan, and at the same time the biggest active volcano, is called Aso and can be easily reached from Fukuoka. Nature-lovers and hikers will definitely find this a rewarding experience.
VOLCANIC WATER BATH
If you prefer to take it easy, you can unwind in an “Onsen“. “Onsen” are public baths with hot springs of volcanic origin. The mineral content of the water is meant to promote health. Visitors to “Onsen” however are advised to familiarise themselves with the rules beforehand. In particular, a thorough wash before entering the pools or the removal of pool shoes in certain areas are mandatory.
TRADITION AND MODERNITY
As in so many other places in Japan, in Fukuoka, tradition and modernity live alongside one another harmoniously. On the one hand, numerous boutiques can be found in the commercial district Tenjin along with the vast Canal City shopping mall- a true shoppers’ paradise. At the same time however it is also possible to find some of the country’s oldest shrines and temples in the city.
