Learn Italian in Viareggio

WHERE SUNBATHING IS A TRADITION
The pleasant climate, the endless fine sandy beaches make Viareggio a very popular resort that attracts thousands of tourists every year. In the evenings, numerous bars and discos appeal to crowds of youthful pleasure seekers, while the annual Puccini opera festival in July and August appeals to an older crowd. During the entire month, Puccini’s most famous operas, including La Boheme, Turandot or Madame Butterfly, are performed on the lake stage in Torre del Lago. Viareggio’s special brand of charm is undoubtedly enhanced by its turn of the century Jugendstil architecture, which still influences the town’s appearance. Cupolas and towers, as well as splendid decorations in ceramics, enamel or flower designs reminiscent of oriental palaces also distinguish many buildings. Many of these palaces are today luxury hotels, exclusive holiday homes or exquisite restaurants. The town has a high-end pedestrian area in the “Passeggiata Margherita”, fringed with numerous stores, restaurants and cafés.

INDIVIDUAL VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY INTO THE HINTERLAND
The historic cities of Lucca and Pisa, as well as the charming villages of the Cinque Terre, are within easy reach by car or bus, and even Florence is just an hour away. Alongside these well known tourist destinations, there are many sleeping villages, impressive castles, fortresses and picturesque port villages just waiting to be discovered. Those looking for absolute relaxation can visit on the traditional thermal baths, of which there are many in the Toskana. Also highly recommended are excursions to the idyllic islands off the coast such as Elba, Giglio or Capria, which can be reached easily by ferry from several harbours.

GASTRONOMIC HOTSPOT
It’s no secret that Italian cuisine is one of the world’s best. Alongside the “usual suspects” like pasta and pizza, visitors owe it to themselves to try the local specialities. The region is famous for wild boar dishes, but there are many excellent fish restaurants as well. A select wine is also a must to accompany the meal- especially since there are quite a few genuine top wines from this area.
