THE PEARL OF CALABRIA
Tropea, a picturesque little town on the Tyrrhenian Sea, with its many little bays, white sandy beaches and crystal clear water, is one of the most beautiful spots on the Mediterranean coast of Calabria. In comparison with Rome, Florence or Milan, it may be historically unimportant but the little town can nonetheless look back on an exciting history. Until the 19th century, it was a wealthy commercial centre, but the economic decline of southern Italy in the 20th century did not stop Tropea. Not until the advent of tourism began the recovery and Tropea is today the best-known destination in Calabria and the centre of local tourism. The town is richly blessed with artistic treasures and buildings, and in summer especially the glorious white sandy beaches (framed by the rocky cliffs) invite visitors to relax, sunbathe and enjoy. On a clear day, you can see from Tropea as far as Sicily and the Aeolian or Liparishen islands. This is a small group of charming islands of volcanic origin (including stromboli, one of Europe’ few active volcanos).
FAR FROM MASS TOURISM
Although Calabria is popular in summer, Tropea has still largely escaped mass tourism. It is still possible to find small, intimate bays where you can watch the sunset in peace or simply enjoy looking at the sea. Other coastal towns near Capo Vaticano are waiting to be discovered, such as Santa Maria, which has a splendid view of the mountain slopes as well as the gorgeous beaches. Time seems to have stopped in many of the small mountain villages in the area, where the atmosphere is distinguished. The houses frequently have wooden balconies where their inhabitants place their “fichi d’India (prickly pears) to dry in the sun. Bread is still baked in traditional pyramid shaped ovens in many places.
