Learn Italian in Taormina

IMPRESSIVE BACKDROP
Taormina- a 1000 years of history, irresistible charm, unforgettable hospitality and undoubtedly one of Italy’s most beautiful towns. Taormina clings to the impressive cliff base of Monte Tauro high above the sea, with the smoke rising from Mount Atna in the background. The Corso Umberto is the most important promenade and orientation point in the town. From the Porta Messina, it is almost a 1 km walk to the Porta Catania through the medieval town centre, past the Piazza 9 Aprile, Taormina’s most beautiful open-air terrace with a view far out along the coast. Countless shops, trattorias, pizzerias and restaurants line the road, which can barely contain the crowds in high summer. If you prefer things somewhat quieter, you can wander off into one of the many small side streets, where you can still find a leafy place to sit and genuine, typically Sicilian shops.

WHAT A PERFORMANCE
The most famous site is the Teatro Greco, a Greco-Roman amphitheatre, which is still used for performances today and from which there is an unforgettable view. In the late 18th century, Goethe enjoyed the view from the Greco-Roman theatre over the city and Mount Atna, while he rested on the top steps of the theatre. High above the city on the slopes of Monte Tauro, the remains of the old castle are visible. It can be reached over a hiking trail, and provides a wonderful view over the city and the coast. If you want to keep climbing, you can go up to the attractive mountain village of Castelmola. Swimming is possible in Mazzaro, a beach resort below the city reached by a funicular. The nearby village of Letojanni (approximately 6 km) is also an inviting place for swimming, with a sand and gravel beach. The road continues southward through Giardini Naxos, the first Greek settlement in Sicily, founded 2700 years ago and today a well-known holiday resort.

ROUGH COASTAL SCENERY
Masses of lava in fantastic shapes and fine grained sand complete the picture around the deep blue of the Mediterranean and invite visitors to stay awhile and swim. Since Sicily established its reputation as a classic travel destination, every traveller has gone through Taormina. Even a short visit leaves every visitor with an impression of the town’s unique charm.
