In the centre of the Tuscan hill country, surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti, Siena stands on three hills- a picture book city. The many gothic buildings, narrow lanes and extensive city walls recall past centuries. With slightly more than 60 000 inhabitants, Siena is a small, manageable city. The meeting point for both locals and tourists is the Piazza del Campo with its sidewalk cafés, filled with life when the weather is good far into the night. Siena is the provincial capital and is home to 2 smaller universities as well as a national wine centre with a research centre for Italian wines.
WHERE TRADITIONS ARE MAINTAINED
The Republic of Siena was already independent in the 13th century and became prosperous through trade and banking. Siena in those days competed with Florence, which in the 13th and 14th centuries was of similar size, and also in the arts. Siena seemed for a long time to be winning the contest, until numerous wars promoted the growth and the influence of Florence. While the renaissance began early into Florence, Siena continued to follow the Byzantine model. The cathedral, marble clad inside and out, dates from this period. The inhabitants of Siena are intensely proud of their city and celebrate this twice a year with the traditional Palio, a horserace in the Piazza del Campo (July 2 and August 16). The entire population participates in the preparations, which last for several weeks. Anything goes in the way of tricks to ensure victory in the reckless horserace around the Piazza del Campo that lasts only a few minutes. The participants in the race are selected by the “Contrade”, the ancient municipal districts of Siena.
