Ravenna, with a population of 150 000, is the capital of the province of the same name and is located in the Emilia Romagna region, some 7 km from the Adriatic Coast. The Canale Candiano links the city with the harbour at Porto Corsini and the Marina di Ravenna resort. A number of pine forests typical of the area are in the vicinity. The sandy beach of Costa Verde stretches for several kilometres along the coast by Ravenna, with many well-known Adriatic resorts, such as Cesenatico and Rimini. Ravenna is also centrally located and such cities as Venice, Bologna and Florence can be reached quickly and easily.

Ravenna offers every year a wide range of festivals, concerts and ballet performances, frequently held outdoors in the summer. There is also a popular antique market once a week. Ravenna has an exciting history: it was the capital of several empires and the starting point for many initiatives in the arts. The city experienced its golden age in the 5th and 6th centuries. There are still many completely preserved buildings, such as the Battisterio, from the Byzantine era.

The many colourful mosaics that decorate the walls, arches and domes of Ravenna’s churches are some of the finest and most valuable in all of Europe. Ravenna has an international training centre for mosaic art in order to preserve this ancient tradition.
