Learn Italian in Milan
NORTHERN ITALY’S CULTURAL CAPITAL
Metropolis, commercial centre, centre of fashion and art. Milan is a cosmopolitan city with a sense of its history, an elegant mixture of tradition and the modern age. Testimony to over 2000 years of history can be seen at every turn. In the centre is the famous cathedral of Milan, the third largest church in the world and one of the most important pieces of gothic architecture. Most of the other sights, such as the Castello Sforzesco, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the largest and one of Europe’s most elegant shopping arcades as well as La Scala, Milan’s world famous opera, recently opened after 3 years of renovation. Milan’s cultural life is rich indeed: countless museums, galleries, theatres and cinemas provide continuous entertainment.
WORKING AND PARTYING
The city is decidedly business like during the day. Milan is the motor of Italy’s economy, the seat of the stock exchange and of most large corporations. However, wherever a lot of work is done, there are also lots of parties. The city has an extensive nightlife. The evening normally begins with an extended dinner in one of the countless restaurants. Milan is famous for its culinary specialities. The evening continues in one of the many bars and nightclubs, with parties and dancing into the wee small hours. The Navigli are a favourite meeting place in summer: artificial canals that provide a network of waterways through the city, lined with markets of every kind as well as cafés, bars and inviting restaurants. This is where the young people of Milan gather to party.
HAUTE COUTURE OR SECOND SEASON
After Paris, Milan is the world’s most important fashion centre. Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada; here you will find some of the top designers creating tomorrow’s trends. In the city centre and the fashion district around the Via Montenapoleone, the streets are crammed with designer shops, shoe stores and jewellers. Regrettably, the treasures on sale are anything but cheap. Nevertheless, budget travellers do not need to go without an extensive shopping experience: the Via Torino and the Corso Buenos Aires have many fashion stores selling inexpensive youthful fashions. Milan and area also have countless outlet stores, selling last season’s designer fashion at affordable prices.
