BAVARIA’S CAPITAL
Elegance, tradition and trends combine to a harmonious whole in Bavaria’s capital. The metropolis on the River Isar shimmers with a wealth of extensive, manicured parks (such as the English Garden), imposing palaces, elegant shopping streets and numerous factories converted into discos and bars, where party goers celebrate the evening. Munich is also, however, an economic giant, home to vast industrial conglomerates such as Siemens, BMW and Hypo-Vereinsbank. Munich is Germany’s most important insurance centre and second largest financial centre; the city’s Max Planck institute means that Munich is also one of Germany’s most important research centres.

Löwenbräu, Spaten or Hacker-Pschorr: Munich is the centre of the art of German brewing. The Augustinakeller, the Hirschgarten and the legendary Hofbräuhaus are the best known popular pubs, where typical Munich delicacies “Schmankerl” (such as Radi, Suckling pig, veal lung, dumplings or Weisswurst sausage are served), the high point of this gayley alcoholic social life is the Oktoberfest, soon to celebrate its 200th birthday. Over a two week period, visitors from all over the world celebrate the Bavarian beer tradition. Almost six million visitors a year make the party on the “meadow” the world’s largest festival.
