Learn German in Freiburg im Breisgau

NOT TOO BIG, NOT TOO SMALL
The typical university city in southern Germany is small enough that students quickly find their way around, with 200 000 inhabitants and around 25 000 students, but also large enough to have plenty to offer. The symbol of this soon to be 900 year old city os the Freiburg Minster with its gothic tower 116 m high, towering high over all of the surrounding buildings. In front of it is the large cathedral square, where there is the farmers’ market every day (except Sunday). Characteristic of the atmospheric old city, alongside the many historic buildings, are the “Bechli”, an extensive network of above ground drainage channels, which have kept the city clean and cool on hot summer days since the middle ages. The many students mean that Freiburg has a lively, varied nightlife, with many bars, pubs and beer gardens, as well as clubs for dancing into the small hours. If you like things somewhat more sedate, several theatres and concert halls offer an extensive programme.

STARTING POINT FOR EXPEDITIONS
At the foot of the Black Forest in the “Three Nations Triangle” with France and Switzerland, Freiburg is an ideal starting point for excursions into the attractive surrounding scenery, or to nearby Stuttgart, Colmar and Strasbourg. The popular Europa-Park, Germany’s largest recreational park is also nearby. The region is noted for its mild climate: Freiburg is reputedly Germany’s warmest city.

CULINARY HOTSPOT
Freiburg is the culinary heart of Southwest Germany, a region noted for its gustatory delights. Many restaurants serve local specialities as well as international cuisine at relatively modest prices. Local specialities include “Flamecake”, “Knöpfler (buttons)”, Baden wine soup with “Kracherle”, rack of rabbit with cream sauce??, asparagus suppers Kaiserstuhl style, turnip-trout wrap and the famous Black Forest cream cake.
