This small, cozy city on the banks of Lake Geneva is also affectionately known as the “pearl of the Riviera”. Shielded by a mountain chain from fog and cold northerly winds, the climate here is decidedly mild by Swiss standards. Its impossible to grow tired of the fantastic panorama of lake and Alps. The high point of the year is the famous Montreux Jazz Festival, held every summer, which attracts up to 200 000 visitors. The city’s pulse rate quickens and the visitors from all over the world celebrate the lively festival in every street and alleyway.

Visitors are especially welcome here and the noble tradition of hospitality dates back some 200 years. The imposing luxury hotels that today dominate the lakeshore were all built after 1861, when Montreux was connected to the international railway network. The list of the prominent visitors who have enjoyed the hospitality of Montreux and the neighbouring community is a long one. Some of the most illustrious names are Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Leo Tolstoi, the Empress Sissi, Victor Hugo, Charlie Chaplin, Ernest Hemingway and Freddie Mercury (the singer of the famous group, Queen), in whose honour a statue was built and who is remembered every year in September on the occasion of “Freddie Mercury’s Montreux Memorial Day. The British group produced some of their greatest hits in the legendary Mountain Studio. Other stars including David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and Deep Purple also recorded their albums here. In short, there can be few cities of this size anywhere that have more to offer than this exceptionally international little town on the Waadtland Riviera. Lausanne also benefits from a location that is not only idyllic but also ideally located: Lausanne is 20 minutes away by train and Geneva is just an hour away.
