FROM COLONY TO A PART OF FRANCE
KColumbus was the first European to land on the island during his return voyage on November 4, 1943. He called it Guadeloupe after the Spanish pilgrimage to Santa Maria de Guadeloupe, as he had promised the monks there that he would name an island after it. The Carib Indians, however, successfully fought off the Spanish in the years that followed. Not until 1635 did the French succeed in colonizing Guadeloupe. Since then it has belonged to France, except for some short interludes. On March 19, 1946, Guadeloupe became an overseas Department (“Département d’Outre Mer”) of France. Since then, it has been not a colony but is regarded as an integral part of the “mother country” in every sense. The inhabitants of Guadeloupe have French nationality.
GLORIOUS BEACHES, RIVERS AND WATERFALLS
Guadeloupe is known for its glorious beaches, thick rainforests and the shimmering beauty of the coastal strip and coral reefs. The many rivers and waterfalls prompted the original inhabitants to call the group of islands “Karukera,” meaning “the island of beautiful waters”.
VOLCANIC ORIGIN
Guadeloupe consists of 8 inhabited and a number of small, uninhabited islands. The two main islands are Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, separated from one another by a narrow channel. The inhabited islands of Marie-Galante and La Desirade are also nearby, as are the two uninhabited Iles de la Petite Terre and the small island group of the Iles des Saintes. Basse-Terre is of volcanic origin with mountains in the interior. Grande-Terre is relatively flat and consists mainly of limestone. Most of the other islands are of volcanic origin.
