2000 YEARS OF HISTORY
Around the year 43 BC, Lyon was founded by the Romans and named ‘Lugdunum.’ The remnants from that time can still be seen today, including the antique theatre on the Fourvière Hill, the ruins of an impressive amphitheatre, thermal baths, and aquaducts. In the old part of town, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, one can experience preserved Renaissance buildings, small cobblestone alleys, and imposing cathedrals. The ‘Presqu’île’ serves as the heart of the city. The penninsula is flanked by both the Saône and Rhône rivers. It is here that one can also find beautiful open spaces, shopping streets, museums, and theatres.
CULINARY STRONGHOLD
Lyon boasts more restaurants per square metre than anywhere else in the world: Food plays a very important role here. It is no co-incidence that Paul Bocuse, ‘Chef of the Century,’ lives and cooks in this city. But in addition to the culinary riches of Lyon, it also has over 180 wall murals throughout the city, modern buildings like the national opera by Jean Nouvel, charming cafés, and trendy shops.
