La Rochelle is the capital of the Département of Charente-Maritime and an important trading centre on the Atlantic coast of France. It is located in the Poitou-Charentes region in western France, some 500 km from Paris. The city acquired a Europe-wide reputation in the early 80s, when Wolfgang Peterson selected the harbour of La Pallice as the location for shooting the film “Das Boot”.

La Rochelle, with a population of around 80 000, is one of the most famous cities on the Atlantic coast. The city has two centres: the attractive, extensive old town and, directly adjacent, the area around the old port, where locals and tourists gather in the numerous restaurants and cafés in fine weather. Outside the old port, La Rochelle has one of Europe’s largest and most modern yacht basins, with well over 2000 moorings. It is hardly surprising that international regattas and water sport competitions are a frequent occurrence. The city is a popular tourist destination in the summer, but in contrast to the south of France, most tourists are French. In the winter, the atmosphere in La Rochelle is quiet, almost dreamy. Some of the most popular excursions take in the famous inland region of Cognac, as well as the islands of Re and Oleron, which are connected with the mainland and lie just off the coast of La Rochelle.
