LAND OF THE CELTS
Brittany, at the western tip of Europe, bears the imprint of its Celtic heritage. Thinly populated countryside and castles, picturesque old towns with menhirs, ancient graves and other testimony to Celtic civilization make an unforgettable impression. A rich cultural heritage and countless sights make Brittany an increasingly popular distination for visitors.
FASCINATING AND MYSTERIOUS
“Finis terrae”- the end of the world, was the name the Romans gave to the western tip of the Breton Peninsula, when they occupied the region some 2000 years ago. The Departement of Finistère borders the Atlantic and the Channel, and with its wild romantic beauty is considered Brittany’s most attractive region. Such fascinating, mysterious areas as Leon, Cornouaille, the Mont d’Arrée mountains or the Montagnes Noires constitute extremely varied landscapes within a very small area, and are appealing destinations for visitors. The Camaret Peninsula lies protectively in front of the beautiful bay of Brest, a strategically important trading and naval port, which saw its heyday in the 18th century and is still internationally significant. In those days, the discoverers set sail from Brest to discover the seas of the world and brought exotic goods back to France.
IMPORTANT PORT
Brest, with a population of around 150 000, has developed into a modern city and important economic centre with its famous university and dynamic trade. Brest in any event welcomes its visitors with Breton hospitality. “La Bretagne, c’est la liberté!”- as the Bretons put it.
