METROPOLISES SURROUNDED BY WILDERNESS
The French lamented the loss of their former colony of Canada to England with the words “a few acres of snow”. The French government seemed almost relieved to have got rid of its colony. The British subsequently made a concerted effort eradicate French influence. Down to our own day, these two cultures have contributed much to Canada’s character, endowing the country with an unusual degree of fascination. Toronto with its skyscrapers, elegant suburbs and geometrical street plan forms a charming contrast to Vancouver, nestled beside the sea and surrounded by mountains, reflecting both the metropolis and nature.
BETWEEN THE LAKES AND THE ARCTIC
Canada is the world’s second largest country and boasts a vast variety of breathtaking scenery. The windswept coasts of the Maritimes are as much a part of Canada as the fertile valleys of Niagara, the endless horizons of the prairies and the barren frozen deserts of the arctic. The great lakes are also among the earths largest. Unspoiled nature, the dimensions of which are at times daunting, exerts an almost magical fascination on visitors. Canada’s climate is, however, not quite so hostile and daunting as it’s reputation. In some areas it is comparable to Europe’s, even if the temperatures in the winter months average somewhat lower. Although Canada has welcomed many immigrants, and continues to do so, it remains one of the world’s most thinly populated areas- one of earth’s last remaining paradises, a country that needs to be seen to be believed.
