Nelson is where South Islanders go on vacation. The northern centre of South Island, right beside Picton, the ferry town and connection between the raw climate of South Island and tropical North Island, is idyllic rather than businesslike. Located between the fiord scenery of the Marlborough Sounds and Abel Tasman National Park, Nelson has its own unique natural landscape. Golden and white sands compete with luxuriant primeval vegetation and emerald green bays. Rare cormorants, colonies of marsh birds and sometimes even seals and whales come to look at visitors.

The population of Nelson doubles in the summer months due to the many New Zealanders who vacation here. New Zealand’s largest archive of historical photographs is here, together with excellent art galleries, avant-garde artists’ studios and delightful open-air museums. Inviting restaurants and cafés, Victorian wooden houses and unbelievably idyllic, lovingly furnished hotels, guesthouses and holiday cottages dominate the city’s skyline.
