The Mt. Maunganui Language Centre, with an average of 40 to 50 students, is an intimate, small-scale school. The school has appropriately equipped classrooms, a lounge and a kitchen. The experienced teaching staff are skilled at providing lively, interesting courses in small classes with an average of eight students. The school was founded in 1990 and is very centrally located. Shops, cafés and beaches are close by and walking distance.
ACCOMMODATION
The carefully selected host families are within close proximity by walking, bicycle or bus, given the small scale of Mt. Maunganui. Bicycles are very popular and can be rented locally at very moderate cost. The families offer single rooms with half board (breakfast and evening meal) and full board on weekends. If desired, the school can also offer accommodation on a farm- although the commuting time is longer. Early reservations are strongly recommended.
RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Mt. Maunganui claims to have one of New Zealand’s best surfing locations. Water sports such as windsurfing, surfing and sailing are the most popular. Other sports such as riding, kayaking, parachute jumping and golf are also available. Beginners or advanced courses can be booked for most sports. The school also offers weekend excursions: Auckland is 3 hours away, Rotorua is 45 minutes away and Tauranga is only 15 minutes away.
