RIDING THE WAVES ON THE VOLCANO
Mt. Maunganui, once a successful Maori fortress, has developed into one of New Zealand’s most popular vacation spots. “The Mount” as the locals call this eldorado for water rats, is located on the Bay of Plenty, southeast of Auckland. Its two beaches, one on the open ocean side, the other on the protected harbour side, attract thousands of visitors every year. Anyone who visits the 232 metre high volcanic Mt. Maunganui is rewarded for the 90-minute climb with a fabulous view of the entire coast. This section of the coast seems to offer absolutely everything: mild, sunny weather year round, some of the finest beaches in the country and many fruit plantations. The nearby regional centre, Tauranga, has all the facilities of a regional capital. Mt. Maunganui is also very popular with surfers, although the beaches offer enjoyment for all, especially given the choice between the wild sections with powerful waves or quiet, protected bays.
CLOUDS OF SMOKE ON THE HORIZON
From Mt. Maunganui, White Island can be seen on the horizon: an active volcano, normally recognized by its cloud of smoke. Helicopters fly to the island from Rotorua and Whakatane. Excursions by boat are also possible from Whakatane to the island, and to Moturiki and Motuotau, to smaller islands, which lie so to speak off the beach of Mount Maunganui. The region is noted for many popular activities such as parachute jumping, a breathtaking ride in a bungee rocket and rafting on the Wairoa River.
