BEAUTY, QUIET AND GENTLE TOURISM
The Coromandel Peninsula is on the East Coast of the North Island, approximately level with Auckland. This peninsula is very popular as a vacation destination for New Zealanders. The atmosphere on Coromandel is formed by the all-pervading quiet and the green wilderness of the untouched mountain world. The scenic beauty of the peninsula has to date not been disturbed by the extremely careful development of the resorts. The various forms of hotel and apartment accommodation on Coromandel are generally smaller and more familiar than usual. Here, tourists and world travellers can still establish in depth contact to the local people within a very short time.
RELICS OF THE GOLD RUSH ERA
The little town of Thames is known as the gateway to this charming peninsula. Many relics of the gold rush keep the memories of the past century alive in the little town around 1850. The age of the gold rush is, however, long past: today, the golden sandy beaches and the mild climate on Coromandel are far more important than gold nuggets. Beside and on the water, vacationers seeking relaxation have countless possibilities, ranging from kayaking, boat excursions to “bush walks”, offer the visitor a fascinating range of holiday activities in glorious surroundings.
HOT SPRINGS WITH MINERAL WATER
The many, generally idyllic sandy beaches of Coromandel include one notable rarity: Hot Water Beach has hot springs, with pleasantly warm mineral water that mixes with sea water at high tide. At low tide, beach lovers have the possibility of digging their own small thermal pool in the sand. Other worthwhile destinations are the historic gold mines, a narrow gauge steam railway or an “Arts and Crafts Trail”. Approximately half the Coromandel Peninsula is protected by the Department of Conservation, including the Hahei Marine Reserve, with its impressive chalk coastline and the rainforests of the volcanic mountain area, studded with ancient, giant trees that survived the age of the loggers.
