Learn English in Christchurch
THE MOST ENGLISH CITY OUTSIDE BRITAIN
Christchurch, the largest city on South Island, likes to be known as “the most English city outside Britain”. This is due to the countless terraced houses with typical front gardens and the many parks, which visitors constantly encounter when walking round the city. Hagley Park is the largest and most attractive of these. The Southern Alps protect the city from the interior with its snow-covered slopes in winter. The proximity of the sea means that Christchurch’s climate is mild. The grid street pattern stretches out from the city centre, with the Avon River meandering through it.
THEATRES, MARKETS, FESTIVALS
The Arts Centre is undoubtedly the prime meeting place and attraction. All of Christchurch appears to gather to enjoy the many concerts, exhibitions, theatres, restaurants and markets. An annual wine festival is held in Christchurch and attracts thousands of visitors from the area.
SANDY BEACHES AND SKI SLOPES
If you want to escape from city life and relax a little, the immediate vicinity offers countless opportunities. In summer, the sandy Pacific beaches are inviting for romantic walks, while in winter the snow-covered slopes of the Southern Alps tempt skiers. Kaikoura Harbour, from where whale watching boats depart, is only 2 hours away. On the Bank Peninsula lies Akaroa, a picturesque fishing village founded by French settlers in 1840, which has lost nothing of its French charm over the years. Although there is much to see and do in Christchurch, New Zealand’s third largest city seems more like a cozy little town. Its inhabitants seem to be unaware of the hectic side of life. This pleasant pace constitutes the particular appeal and charm of Christchurch.
