With a population of over 1 million, Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city and its economic and cultural centre. Fully a quarter of the country’s total population lives in the coastal metropolis. The ever-present sea gives New Zealand’s secret capital a very special character. From One Tree Hill and Mount Eden, both extinct volcanoes, Auckland’s vast sea of houses, its skyline and two large harbours are spread out at the feet of the observer. Looking at the harbours, it’s easy to see why Auckland is known as the “city of sails,” for there are boats as far as the eye can see.
VICTORIAN IMPRESSIONS
Parnell Village is close to the city centre. This historic part of the city has an appealing mixture of fine Victorian wooden houses, many small shops and cozy cafés. There is also the huge “Auckland Domain Park”, in which more than 10,000 tropical and subtropical plants are raised and cultivated on more than 80 hectares. Queen Street is the main artery of the city, strongly reminiscent of London, with a touch of English nonchalance.
COZY AND COMFORTABLE
During the annual regatta, the city turns into a gigantic market place and visitors come from all points of the compass to experience this sailing spectacle. Auckland is also an ideal starting point for many destinations on North Island. One of New Zealand’s finest beaches, Cathedral Cove, is located on the Coromandel Peninsula, while just a few kilometres further on visitors can swim in pleasant temperatures on Hot Water Beach. Although Auckland has grown to substantial size, it is still a cozy, friendly city that enjoys welcoming visitors.
