A TRADING CENTRE WITH AN EXCITING HISTORY
Galway, Ireland’s western city on the Corrib River is a minor jewel: the mixture is just right. The streets are attractive and well kept, the facades are imaginative, and the entire city pulses with life and a youthful atmosphere. The city’s heart beats in its cafés, restaurants and pubs. The Spanish Gate near the “Tone Wolf Bridge” on the western bank of the Corrib is a reminder of the glory days in the 13th century, when the Normans who lived there engaged in a flourishing trade with Spain. Christopher Columbus is reputed to have prayed in the church of St. Nicholas before he sailed further westwards and discovered America.

LYNCHING IN GALWAY
16th century Lynch Castle provides a reminder of the famous Lynch family, which provided no fewer than 83 mayors. In 1493, James Lynch was obliged to condemn his own son to death for murder, but no hangmen wanted to execute the son of the famous family, so Lynch hanged his son himself. The Irish believe that the world “lynch” can be traced back to this event. Galway is the starting point for many fascinating excursions into Connemara, an area noted for its rust red soil on the moors, deep blue lakes or the impressive landscapes of Achill Island.
